    Reflective films can generally be divided into two major categories, one is a metal reflective film, and the other is an all-dielectric reflective film. In addition, there is a metal dielectric reflective film that combines the two. These three high-reflection films are available.

    Generally, metals have a large extinction coefficient. When a light beam is incident on a metal surface by air, the amplitude of light entering the metal is rapidly attenuated, so that the light energy entering the metal interior is correspondingly reduced, and the reflected light energy is increased. The larger the extinction coefficient, the faster the attenuation of the light amplitude, and the less the light energy entering the metal interior, the higher the reflectivity. People always choose those metals with large optical coefficients and stable optical properties as metal film materials. The thin metal material commonly used in the ultraviolet region is aluminum. Aluminum and silver are commonly used in the visible region, and gold, silver and copper are commonly used in the infrared region. In addition, chromium and platinum are also commonly used as film materials for special films. Since materials such as aluminum, silver, and copper are easily oxidized in the air to lower the performance, they must be protected by a dielectric film. Commonly used protective film materials are silicon oxide, magnesium fluoride, silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, and the like.

    There is little further improvement in performance that can be achieved with two-layer coatings, given the limitations existing in usable film indices. For higher performance, further layers are required.

    Thetford [10] has devised a technique for designing three-layer antireflec- tion coatings where the reflectance is zero at two wavelengths and low over a wider range than in the two-layer coating. The arrangement consists of a layer of intermediate index next to the substrate, followed by a high-index layer and finally by a low-index layer on the outside. The indices are chosen at the outset and the method yields the necessary layer thicknesses. There is an advantage in specifying layer indices rather than thicknesses because of the limited range of materials available. Although the actual design of a coat- ing would probably be most efficiently tackled by a process of refinement of a likely starting design, our working through the Thetford method is never- theless worthwhile because it is an excellent example of reasoning using the vector diagram and it gives great insight.
